フィリピン大学 ディリマン校(以下、「UP大学」という)って知ってますか？
フィリピンの東大と呼ばれるほどの名門校だそうです。
大学のレベルを示す指標とされている世界最大の評価機関であるイギリスのクアクアレリ・シモンズ（QS）では、東大が１５位でUP大学は６９位となっている。フィリピンでは断トツのランクだ。

そんな名門UP大学では、このクリスマスシーズンに恒例となっているランタンパレードの行事が中止になったそうです。
そして、パレードの代わりに今年フィリピンを襲った様々なことを忘れずに記憶するために簡単にプログラムを今月１８日に行う。

UP大学のランタンパレードの起源は、夜明けのミサへの道を照らすためにランタンを運ぶという古いクリスマスの伝統のオマージュらしいが、パンデミックの夜明けへの道を照らすよりも学生の安全が優先だ。

Annual UP Lantern Parade canceled

dreadful newsMANILA, Philippines — The grounds of University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman will not be illuminated by colorful floats as the premier state university has decided not to hold its annual Lantern Parade.

In a Dec. 10 memorandum, vice chancellor for community affairs Aleli Bawagan said that in lieu of the parade, a simple program would be held at Quezon Hall on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. “to commemorate and remember the entirety of 2020,” when the country faced one tragedy after another — from the eruption of Taal Volcano in January, the ongoing pandemic since March and the onslaught of typhoons from October to November.
